Cork is peeled from the bark of the cork oak and comes mainly from Portugal, where these oaks thrive. Cork can be harvested several times per plant, but there are several years between harvests. The boards offered here are made of cork granules, which are usually left over from the manufacture of cork products (e.g. cork parquet) and are bound with a polyurethane resin.

Cork has many good properties. The raw material cork is a vegan natural product and can be used under temperatures ranging from - 200 °C to + 120 °C. Contrary to some assumptions, cork is poorly combustible, cork floats in water, is water repellent and hardly absorbs water. Cork can be recycled (even the resin-bonded boards), but there must be no impurities adhering to the cork when it is collected. Collected cork is processed into a recycled granulate, which is used for insulation purposes in construction. In most cases, the demand for this granulate exceeds the supply. So collecting pays off in a sustainable way.
