The E2 table frame (known as Eiermann) and accessories
Please select the desired height and width from the side sections and the desired length of your table frame from the cross struts. The side sections and cross struts can all be combined to create table frames of different sizes and heights. The smallest table frame is 660 x 600 x 1000 mm (h x d x l), the largest 720 x 780 x 1350 mm. You can also choose whether the cross struts are screwed to the side section in the middle or offset to the side. The latter variant allows more legroom under the table if it is primarily used from one side, i.e. as a desk.
When assembling the frame with an offset cross, please note that the cross struts cannot be assembled at random, as the holes in the side sections are in different places.
E2, known as Eiermann, table frames are very stable and table tops weighing up to approx. 50 kg are reliably supported. As a rule, the table tops rest loosely on the plugs of the side parts and protrude on all sides. This is not a problem if the table top is heavy enough not to slip. If you want to be more secure, you can place the table top on anti-slip rubber stoppers or screw it to the side parts using the table top fasteners or the height adjusters with head plate. The adjustable feet help if the table is placed on an uneven surface.
The relatively low original height of 660 mm is sufficient for use as a drawing table, as this makes it easier to reach the rear area of the table top. For use as a writing or dining table, we recommend extending the side sections with the height adjusters. Or you can choose the 720 mm high side sections from the outset, as these, together with a 30 mm thick tabletop, achieve a comfortable height of 750 mm. When using the rubber castors, the table is raised by approx. 75 mm, which is why a comfortable table height is achieved even with a 660 mm high side section without height adjusters.
The top can be tilted in various ways: The easiest way is to place the front edge of the top on the horizontal struts of the side sections. This creates an inclination of 2 degrees, which can be increased to up to 19 degrees with additional height adjusters. If the top is to be tilted with height adjusters without resting on the horizontal struts of the side panels, the fixings for tilted tops are required above a certain inclination, otherwise the top will start to slide. In this case, the rear plates are screwed to the top and the top rests loosely on the front plates. Please note that it is not possible to tilt the top using the height adjusters with top plate.
The history of the E2
In1953, Egon Eiermann designed a metal table frame for work in drawing rooms and architectural offices, which was manufactured by the Max Meier company and also in the metal workshop at the Technical University of Karlsruhe. It consists of two side parts that are welded together by a spatially tilted cross to form a rigid table frame. A simple wooden board is placed on the frame and serves as a drawing surface.
In1965, Klaus Brunner, one of Egon Eiermann's assistants, suggested a transportable version of the table frame when he moved to Freiburg. Adam Wieland, head of the metal workshop at the Technical University of Karlsruhe since 1963, further developed Egon Eiermann's table frame by tilting the diagonally arranged cross struts vertically and connecting them to the side sections in a detachable manner. The E2 is born. A few days later, Egon Eiermann inspected the design and was impressed. In the same year, Adam Wieland begins production of the table frame, which establishes itself as the standard table for architects and designers over the next 45 years.
1995 While Egon Eiermann's welded table frame disappears from the market in the 1980s, the popularity of Adam Wieland's E2 continues to grow. For many of its aficionados, the E2 becomes the so-called "Eiermann table". In the same year, a furniture dealer acquires the rights to the term Egon Eiermann and his products. He modified the original frame from 1953 and, at the end of the 1990s, also launched it on the market as a demountable version with a metric tube diameter and various accessories already developed by Adam Wieland, such as a height adjuster and cable duct. As the dismountable table frame from Adam Wieland is an independent further development of the original, the production and distribution rights remain with Adam Wieland even after the "Eiermann" name is sold in 1995.
In2009, the product name E2 was finally developed and registered as a trademark with the German Patent Office.
