Gum arabic is a substance that is made from the bark sap of different kind of acacia trees. It is water soluble, similar to pectin, and serves as a binder and leveling agent in the art of painting. Gum arabic increases the brilliance, glossiness or transparency of watercolour and gouache paints and also increases their adhesion to the substrate. On wet coats of paint it controls the gradations of colour and reduces the amount of discolouration. Gum arabica is often employed as a binding agent for self-made watercolour paints (rubbing pigments). It can be thinned with water and remains water soluble even after drying.
