This really high quality palette knife from the Liquitex company has an ergonomically shaped wooden handle and a flexible, rust-free stainless steel blade and is normally used as a professional level aid when employing the impasto painting technique (thick application of paint usually showing paint strokes). These blades are used for applying pasty paints on a canvas as well as for mixing paints on a palette. When applied to a canvas, the knife can be used to directly create textures in the paint. The best mediums to use with a palette knife are viscous oil and acrylic paints as well as heavy gel and structure paste. If you apply too much paint to your canvas the palette knife can be used to easily "scrape" the excess paint off. The spade-shaped blades come in different shapes and lengths and are slightly offset in the handle so that the leading hand can be held parallel to the canvas surface.
