In 1980, Lamy introduced the Safari, and the fountain pen—which was available at the time in colors such as orange and olive green—quickly became a sought-after item among students; it went on to become the most widely used school fountain pen in Germany. The Safari’s design has remained unchanged to this day; only the color palette has been updated once since its introduction. This Lamy isn’t a fountain pen for beginners; it’s a student’s second or third fountain pen—a pen for older students, teenagers, and anyone who continues to enjoy the Safari even as they get older.
From our own experience, we can say: This Lamy fountain pen is sturdy. Even if you chew on the end of the barrel during many class periods, it shows only minor signs of wear at most, and it can even withstand the occasional drop. Similar in design to the Safari fountain pen is the SAFARI BALLPOINT PEN, which comes without a cap but as a push-button ballpoint pen.
The fountain pen comes standard with the most common nib size, M, and can be optionally fitted with a different line width.
If you’ve ever wondered why your newly purchased fountain pen has slight ink marks on the nib assembly, it’s because of Lamy’s quality control. Lamy tests all nib assemblies with highly diluted ink and performs a writing test, which is evaluated both visually and acoustically. After this writing test, the nib assembly is rinsed with clean water and dried. In some cases, residual ink particles may settle around the nib and be visible. These are not signs that the fountain pen has already been used, but rather evidence of Lamy’s uncompromising quality control.
