maple wood barrel, plastic grip with rubberised grooves, ABS cap with a label field, polished stainless steel nib, silver coloured, with iridium tip, A width; compatible ink cartridge: Lamy T 10, Design: Development Group Mannheim, Professor Bernt Spiegel
First, first-graders at traditional schools practice writing with wax crayons and pencils; eventually, the fountain pen is introduced as the “supreme discipline” (in Waldorf schools, the quill pen is sometimes still used, but we’ll just keep that in mind for now). A good fountain pen for learning to write during these early stages is the LAMY abc, which was developed in collaboration with educators specifically for handwriting instruction. The charming, child-friendly design actually gives that away right away. The abc has an ergonomically shaped, rubberized grip that supports a natural, relaxed finger position. In addition, the grip indentations are quite slip-resistant and easy for children’s hands to grasp. The plastic cube at the top of the barrel prevents the pen from rolling off the table when the cap is not on. Incidentally, the maple wood used for the upper barrel comes from the Black Forest and has a pleasantly smooth finish. Naturally, this fountain pen is significantly shorter than most others, giving it a center of gravity suitable for children, and it is not very heavy overall, which means children’s hands tire less quickly than with heavier pens.
The fountain pen comes standard with the particularly sturdy “A” nib for beginners, which is slightly firmer and can withstand the still-unskilled, forceful writing of children who are just learning. This nib can optionally be replaced with a special left-handed nib.
If you’ve ever wondered why your newly purchased fountain pen has slight ink marks on the nib assembly, it’s because of Lamy’s quality control process. Lamy tests all nib assemblies with highly diluted ink and performs a writing test, which is evaluated both visually and acoustically. After this writing test, the nib assembly is rinsed with clean water and dried. In some cases, residues of these ink particles may settle around the nib and be visible. These are not signs that the fountain pen has already been used, but rather evidence of Lamy’s uncompromising quality control.
