The Schmincke Horadam watercolor retro sets refer to historical paint sets and accessories from the 1930s. The contents include high-quality, current products from the Schmincke range and from partner brands. Horadam watercolors are based on high-quality pigments and gum arabic as a binder. They are characterized by a high pigment concentration with intensive colour release and a transparent glazing effect. Paints that have already dried can be dissolved again with water and further processed.

The design of the sets is based on historical models of the Schmincke brand, both in terms of the material and the printing with the characteristic owl. The sets are complemented by a retro watercolor insert and an accompanying letter from the former management explaining the historical context of the edition. In this way, the sets combine a high-quality selection of traditional artists' watercolors with a design and features based on the manufacturer's historical color boxes.

Retro set Technical Tones
The Schmincke Horadam watercolor retro set "Technical Tones" is based on a historical color composition that was originally used for technical drawings according to the former DIN 201 standard. The metal box contains nine selected Horadam watercolors in whole pots. The color selection is based on color codes that were once used in architecture, engineering and technical drawings to represent different materials. For example, orange stood for bronze or wood, violet for cast steel, dark green for light metals or wire coils and gray for concrete or quarry stone masonry.

This historical system makes the set suitable for all applications in which materials or structures are to be depicted in different colors. This can be helpful for illustrative architectural drawings, technical sketches or educational presentations. At the same time, the color selection can also be used in free watercolor painting. The tones can be used individually or mixed together, creating additional color nuances and allowing graduated color areas or transparent glazes to be created. The metal box in retro design features the historic Schmincke owl motif. An integrated cup rail ensures a stable position of the paints in the box.

Retro set Jan Wellem
The HORADAM watercolor retro set "Jan Wellem" from Schmincke is based on a historic watercolor travel case from the 1930s. The metal box contains six Horadam artists' watercolors in tubes of 5 ml each and is designed as a compact color selection for on the go. These include the historic special shades Solferino, Gummi guttae and Cassler brown. In combination with classic shades such as light cobalt blue or ochre, warm earth tones as well as strong color contrasts and transparent glazes can be developed. This makes the set suitable for illustrative work or landscape sketches. Thanks to its handy format, the box is easy to transport and allows you to use watercolors outside of the studio - for example when traveling, for nature studies or in an urban environment.

The outer lid of the metal box bears the classic owl print, while the inside of the lid features a historical print relating to "Jan Wellem". It is named after Johann Wilhelm II of the Palatinate (1658-1716), a patron of art and culture who made Düsseldorf a cultural center of his time. This art-historical reference ties in with the tradition of artists' paint production in Düsseldorf, where Schmincke has been based for many years.

Retro set in a wooden box
The HORADAM watercolor retro set in a wooden box from Schmincke is a comprehensive compilation of artists' watercolors and accessories based on historical models from the 1930s. The walnut-stained wooden box made of beech wood picks up on design elements of early artists' paint boxes, including brass fittings, the historic owl print and tube labels in retro design. The set combines basic equipment for watercolor painting with a design based on the tradition of Schmincke artists' paints.

Inside the box are twelve Horadam artists' watercolors in tubes of 5 ml each. The color selection covers a basic spectrum of yellow, red, blue, green, earth and black tones and allows you to develop color contrasts, mixtures and graduated glazes. The palette is complemented by three historical special shades from the Retro line - Gummi guttae, Solferino and Cassler brown. In addition to the colors, the set contains a porcelain palette and additional porcelain bowls for mixing and diluting the colors. A da Vinci watercolor brush in size 10 (Limited Edition) completes the set, as does a Kaweco mechanical pencil made of brass with retro engraving, which can be used for preliminary drawings or composition sketches.
