The term “torchon” (floor cloth) is French and is associated with a very course linen texture. Paper with this designation has a pronounced rough and cloudy surface texture and is especially suitable when a “generous” and artistic painting technique is being employed. Paint on this paper will react (run) differently from other watercolour paper. A great deal of bleeding of most paints will occur when applied with the wet-on-wet method and very distinctive fringes of colours along boundaries will appear. In addition, paint will meld with the sizing in the paper, thereby producing brilliantly colourful pictures. Torchon paper should not really be used by beginners, but experts will be unavoidably drawn to it. Hahnemühle Torchon can also be used with gouache, tempera and acrylic techniques.
