The Derwent Inktense Blocks watercolor chalk set contains highly pigmented, water-soluble color blocks for expressive, flat or detailed work. The solid blocks offer you a larger color surface than classic pencils and therefore enable both bold lines and broad color applications. They are suitable for drawing, illustration and mixed media projects as well as for large-format works that require a quick, direct application of paint.
When dry, the Inktense blocks can be used like pastel or wax crayons. You can use them for hatching, outlining or surface priming. In combination with water, the colors develop their intense, ink-like luminosity. A key feature of the Inktense range is that the paint becomes permanent after drying. This means that layers of paint that have already dried will not dissolve again when reworked with water. This allows you to apply several layers on top of each other without smudging the areas underneath.
The high pigmentation ensures strong, clear color results. Working with water creates even surfaces, soft transitions or glazing effects. Without water, the structures remain more direct and grainy. You can apply the blocks directly to the paper or pick up pigment from the block surface with a brush. It is also possible to dissolve pigment dust or work on textiles and other absorbent surfaces, provided they are suitable for water-based media. The square shape of the blocks enables precise work with edges as well as fast filling of larger areas.
