The disadvantage of synthetic fibres as compared to real hair and bristle in paintbrushes is that the latter has a microscopically rough surface on which the paints stick much better than on a completely smooth synthetic fibre. The Da Vinci Grigio synthetic paintbrushes, however, have been processed such that the fibres are slightly roughened and thus are also capable of taking up and holding a lot of paint. These paintbrushes are particularly good for painting with pasty acrylic and oil paints.
The hexagonal handle, which was developed by da Vinci, has from three to six flattened areas at its thickest point that will prevent the brush from rolling away. These flattened areas are so subtle that when the brush is being used not only will your hand not tire but they will also not hinder the turning motion necessary when shaping the brush tip.
