The Copic Ciao SHADE set of 4 contains four alcohol-based markers in different shades of gray. The sets combine coordinated gray values within a color family so that you can systematically build up shadows, tonal gradations and soft transitions. Depending on the set variant, the set contains either lighter or darker shades of the Cool Gray or Warm Gray color series. This allows you to create different light and shadow effects in illustrations or sketches.
The gray sets are put together in such a way that color values can be logically built upon one another. Light sets contain finely graduated, light gray values for subtle shading or atmospheric depth. Darker sets extend the tonal range with more intensive gray tones that are suitable for stronger shadows or stronger contrasts. Copic also differentiates between Cool Gray with a neutral-cool effect and Warm Gray with a slightly warmer color character. This allows you to specifically control the effect of an illustration, for example with technical motifs, architectural drawings or figure illustrations.
The alcohol-based ink in the markers, which is absorbed evenly into the paper, allows you to create homogeneous color areas without hard edges. If you lay several layers of color on top of each other, you can also gradually build up tonal values. This procedure is often used when coloring illustrations, character drawings, architectural sketches or product designs. By repeatedly working over an area with different shades of gray, you can smooth out transitions and precisely model shadow areas.
Copic Ciao markers are part of the Copic system and can be refilled. The tips can be replaced if necessary so that markers can be reused over the long term. Each marker has two different tips. The flexible brush tip is suitable for line variations, organic shapes and controlled color gradients. By changing the pressure, you can create both fine lines and wider traces of color. The wedge tip on the opposite side is often used for larger areas or even applications of paint.
