Where this inconspicuous black film heats up over 28°C, it begins to turn red, then increases to violet over orange, yellow, green and blue, only to turn black again above 34°C. As it cools, the process then goes backwards again. This property, known as thermochromism, enables impressive experiments bordering on magic: placed on the hand, it appears after a short time as a colored ghost image. If you place it preheated, e.g. on a coin, the rapid color change shows the heat-absorbing property of metals.
