The rings are made by bending flat brass into a rounded hollow tube shape in such a way that on the side where the two edges come together there is a slight opening. This tube is then joined end to end to make the ring. Besides the small slit, the rings are really only distinguished from solid rings in that they are much lighter. The many different sizes mean that they have numerous possible uses in handicrafts, the trades and basic handiwork, for example, as curtain rings or for use in making jewellery or as a connector piece between cords in macramé.
