Soapstone, also known as steatite or soaprock, is a type of talc that occurs in dense compound lumps and, because of its easy workability, is often found being used for carving work. This easily cut mineral is found in numerous regions of the world in colours ranging from whitish, yellowish, green-greyish and reddish. Treatment: Soapstone can be worked on by means of rasping, engraving, cutting and sawing with good success. Tools like rasps, files, old wood carving tools and knives are especially suited for working on it. It is also very unproblematic to cut soapstone using a CIRCULAR TABLE SAW – thus can stone be represented by “stone” in architectural models. Once the cutting work has been done, the finishing work (smoothing) can be completed using SANDPAPER or STEEL WOOL. Finally, a thin oil which is as colourless as possible (e.g. NATURAL RESIN OIL FOR SOAPSTONE) should be rubbed into the soapstone and, after it has been absorbed, polished using the ball of your hand, a piece of leather or a wool cloth. TWO-COMPONENT GLUE is best for gluing work on soapstone. Dust in the air…
