When making moulds, silicone oil is added to the mixture in order to decrease the Shore hardness of the moulding silicone. In doing so, however, the mechanical attributes will be affected. In the case of serial pourings, the oil is used to regenerate the silicone mould when aggressive media are being poured. In addition, silicone oil can also be used in the workshop as a lubricant (sewing machine oil). When working with silicone oil, the usual safety precautions when dealing with any chemicals should be observed.
