Tappetino a filamenti in PVC morbido

We looked for a material like this for a long time, one that looked like an Asian noodle snack or a plate full of spaghetti cut into sheets, which incidentally accounts for the name! The spaghetti mat is made up of approximately one-half millimetre thick PVC (vinyl) filaments that are interwoven and glued to one another in a tangled “mess”. The mat is soft and capable of quickly rebounding back to shape after being compressed; you can´t help but want to crumble it in your hand or to tramp all over it – it is a congenial material that immediately calls to mind the question “what can I do with such a thing?”.

The manufacturer sells it as an indoor or outdoor entrance mat and claims its greatest feature to be that dirt will fall through the open filament structure and remain happily out of sight. Even in the face of changing temperatures or moisture conditions it will not distend or change shape or shrink because the PVC filaments will not absorb water. In addition, the manufacturer maintains that this easy-to-clean mat can withstand medium to heavy traffic, which in effect means that you can walk all over it or drive a shopping cart over it all day long; in short, relatively heedlessly put the thing through its paces. You can use it, then, for wiping off your shoes and – what else?

Its permeability has the further advantage that this material can be back-lit (if necessary with an ACRYLIC or PVC-FILM diffuser between the light source and the mat). With or without a light source, this mat can be used to make a lampshade or as wall panelling – or as the background material on a display wall whereby the possibility presents itself to use the filament texture for hanging hooks, clamps, rings, etc. and using these as attachment points for any variety of things. They can also be used as place mats on your table, whereby their original advantageous attribute when used as an entrance mat comes once again to the fore: crumbs “fall thru” and remain out of sight, preserving the table’s ambiance in the process. In addition, if the mat has become soiled it is easy to care for; namely, you can simply wash it out with water. A person might also be inclined to use it as a bath mat or beach mat, as a gym mat or floor mat for your car or cut it into strips and use it as cushioning. We’re sure you can come up with more!

Cutting the spaghetti mat can be done with a scissors but using a straight edge and cutter (or guillotine cutter) is probably best. When gluing to a flat surface, you can use a spray glue (DISPLAY MOUNT) or PATTEX TRANSPARENT or, where appropriate, a cartridge glue with silicone whereby you can lay down a thicker layer into which the “noodles” can really sink and become absolutely secure (bombproof). The mat has an open construction top and bottom (no backing); you can, however, glue a RUBBER MAT, an opaque VARNISHED FILM or a transparent SWING DOOR LEAF to it as a backing or just use them as an underlay. The appropriate adhesives have already been listed.

A word about fire resistance classification: We have been supplied with a test result certifying the mat according to the EU norm EN 13501-1 - the problem is that the test applied to the same material but with a different thickness (15 mm) and only in the colours black, grey and brown. This group was determined to be flame resistant. Strictly speaking, the test results only apply to those colours in that thickness – till now no other testing results have been determined.
