Even though at first glance they appear to be very expensive, these easy to mix liquid dyes are worth the money because a very small amount goes a very long way (50 g is enough to colour 10 kilos of synthetic resin). These dyes are great for colouring polyurethane, polyester and epoxy resins. These dyes, however, cannot be used with silicone. Only pigments that have excellent lightfastness are used when making the dyes (color-fast level 7-8, 8 being the highest). In reporting this high level by testing we are making no claims about the UV resistance and lightfastness of any object that has been dyed with this product. It should be noted that a coat of a UV blocking paint like MARABU UV-PROTECTION SPRAY will improve the lightfastnesss quite a bit. Transparent resins remain transparent as long as only a small amount of dye is used; they will become opaque if larger amounts are used and/or if, additionally, a small amount of white dye is added. Normally, the dye is stirred into one of the two components of the synthetic resin before mixing them together. In the case of polyurethane the dye should not be added to the component that contains the moisture-sensitive isocyanate. In the case of polyester resins the dye should be added to the resin before the hardener has been mixed with it. As a rule up to 3% of the weight of the resin can be added to the mixture without there being any influence on the mechanical properties of the hardened material. Please note that the amount of the resin (first component) will be increased because of the addition of the dye!
