Applications: Dichloromethane is an organic solvent that can solvate a multiplicity of thermoplastic plastics which makes it suitable for use as a “diffusion adhesive” for polystyrene, acrylic glass, polycarbonate, PET-G and ABS. The plastics polypropylene and polyethylene, which are not solvable, cannot be bonded with dichloromethane. Treatment: Making a bond with a solvent is very easy. The precisely cut assembly pieces are held together, the liquid applied to the joint with a brush and a short amount of time is allowed to pass. The solvent flows into the joint, solvates the plastic and the pieces are bonded. This technique is not suitable for bonding large areas because the organic solvent evaporates too quickly.
Importante!
Dichloromethane is hazardous to health and is suspected of being carcinogenic and mutagenic (reproductive harm). For this reason, when working with it you should avoid contact with eyes and skin and it’s fumes should not be breathed (best is to wear a respirator mask)! No occupational exposure limit has been set. Up till the end of 2005 the maximum allowable concentration in a workplace was 350 mg/m³.
