If in the past bamboo was originally just a construction material that was only employed in its tubular or semi-tubular form, this incredibly fast-growing wood can now be found being used to make plywood, bamboo-rod panels and veneer. This thick-veneer bamboo sheet is a five millimetre thick board made with rectangular bamboo strips that are about 20 mm wide and glued horizontally, one to the other. The result is a very beautiful, uniform surface that is only broken up by the occasional nodes (the knots that separate bamboo stalks into sections). It also means that the resulting boards are much more stable crosswise to the grain as compared to lengthwise – it is much easier to break it in the lengthwise direction. In terms of the areas of application, this fact is of secondary importance because these boards are usually glued to a backing to form surface layers to be used as the surfaces of counters or tables, for parquet flooring, worktops or doors; in smaller sizes, they can be employed without the need of reinforcement. Bamboo can be oiled or varnished with the standard agents that are used with any wood surface. It can also be sanded, cut with all conventional saws and even treated with a laser.
Importante!
Absolute flatness cannot be guaranteed because these bamboo sheets are so thin.
